The thermostat is a component that blocks the flow of coolant to the radiator until the engine has warmed up. When the engine is cold, no coolant flows through the engine. Once the engine reaches its operating temperature, the thermostat opens.
Loosen the reservoir cap just a little, then step back while the pressure releases. Then, remove the cap completely. If the coolant level is low, add the correct coolant to the reservoir (not the radiator itself). You can use diluted coolant by itself, or a 50/50 mixture of concentrated coolant and distilled water.
Apr 22, 2011 · Guys say the best procedure is to drain the system; fill with tap water and small amount of soap; tablespoon or so, then run long enough to open thermostat and get the whole system cleaned. Then drain and flush once with plain tap water, then add 2gal coolant and enough tap water to top off.
